The Skills for Life Purpose

Skills for Life exists to provide opportunities for students to explore various career opportunities by visiting and learning about local employers and educational programs in order to more clearly understand their future and the paths they can follow to make their calling a reality.

What is Skills for Life?

Skills for Life, built into the structure of our Bridge to Excellence program, is one of two ways (along with service opportunities) in which students and their mentors to more deeply engage with the greater community each year. In Skills for Life, mentoring groups explore various career paths and opportunities. They do this through:

  1. Conversations during mentoring sessions focused on who students are, what their interests and strengths are, and what they see their passions being.

  2. Visits to a diverse group of local employers to get first-hand experience seeing what different educational and career paths may lead to. Students get direct contact with employers in order to ask questions and build deeper connections.

  3. Follow up conversations and activities to apply what they’ve learned and to further explore the practical ways that their interests and passions can result in meaningful, sustainable work and career choices.
